Everything You Always Wanted to Know, and More, about Nutraceuticals

Omega-3s, antioxidants, isoflavones. Are the alleged health benefits of this stuff real, or just real cash money for those on the receiving end of the $22 billion dietary supplement industry? This comprehensive, as in "long and informative" piece in the Scientific American answers questions about many of the claims, and asks a few questions about some of the claims. Here’s the nut graph:
To date, most nutraceuticals have been the subject more of marketing
hype than of methodical clinical testing, and for many, it is not even
yet known whether they provide more benefits than risks for consumers.
But in at least a handful of cases, the science is starting to catch up
with the health claims.
