Do energy drinks make you crazy? Or do crazy people drink energy drinks? The correct answer, according to research conducted at University of Buffalo’s Research Institute on Addictions, is a little bit of both. An institute press release attempts to explain that research scientist Kathleen E. Miller surveyed 795 undergraduate students in an effort to examine the relationships between energy drink consumption and
risk-taking in college students and secondly, “toxic jock identity†—
characterized by hypermasculinity and risk-taking behaviors among
college-age athletes.
Miller found that frequent energy drink consumers (six or more days a month) were three times as likely as less
frequent energy drink consumers or non-consumers to have smoked
cigarettes, abused prescription drugs and been in a serious physical
fight in the year prior to the survey. They reported drinking alcohol,
having alcohol-related problems and using marijuana about twice as
often as non-consumers. They were also more likely to engage in other
forms of risk-taking, including unsafe sex, not using a seatbelt,
participating in an extreme sport and doing something dangerous on a
dare. She also found that students who thought of themselves as jocks were more likely to drink energy drinks. “Ultimately,†says Miller,
“undergraduates’ frequent use of Red Bull and other energy drinks
should be seen by peers, parents, and college officials as a potential
predictor of ‘toxic jock identity.’â€Â

That’s a good study, however that is a study on kids 18-22 years old that don’t need an energy drink. How about a study on people 35-50 yrs old that could actually use it. The people that work 50+ hours a week, have kids, married, coach kids, still play sports/workout and have a hundred other things going on. I want to see that study. I know a lot of people in this category that drink energy drinks and less than 5% smoke, fight, drive without a seat belt, etc… Your thoughts?
I am 62 and have never used alcohol or smoked or abused any drugs. I have never experimented with any recreational drugs either. I have sleep apnea and use energy drinks to get me up and at ’em. Without energy drinks, I am about ready to check out. The energy drinks keep me going.
read the ingredients, I stopped drinking Gatorade due to the high salt contents on the label, the energy drinks have much more. Usually the energy drinks like Gatorade are for College and Pro Athelete who are doing intense physical excersise. But most people are fooled to taking them
