The author’s advice to follow the traffic laws, followed by a wink and a grin, doesn’t seem like the best way to avoid harm. It seems like a way to defend against a lawsuit if somebody gets hurt following his tips. “Follow the law” for non-cyclists usually means follow the law or get a ticket. So I don’t get to whiz through stop signs when I think nobody’s looking. Cyclists, however, honor the traffic laws by breaking them, so its hardly much of a surprise that there are so many close calls between drivers and riders in urban areas. (And, for that matter, between riders and pedestrians.) I wonder if there’d be fewer if riders were actually following the law more than ignoring it.
