The Washington Post reports that while "experts" have known for a while that people who exercise as they age experience fewer cognitive problems, no one has known exactly why. Now they do. Maybe. Research published in the December issue of the Annals of Neurology suggests that a rise in blood sugar–such as that which occurs naturally with aging– appears to damage the hippocampus, a part of the brain critical to learning and memory. Exercise, it turns out, is an excellent way to stabilize blood glucose levels.
