Geezer has no doubt that many readers would rather drink a glass or two of beet juice every day than take a pill to keep their blood pressure within a healthy range. To each her own, and to those readers with such a preference, here is some good news. Science Daily reports that researchers at Barts and The London School of Medicine have discovered
that drinking just 500ml of beetroot juice a day can significantly
reduce blood pressure. The research suggests that health benefits that had been antioxidant vitamin content are more likely the result of dietary nitrate
contained within beetroot juice – and similarly in green, leafy
vegetables. Elsewhere, the Los Angeles Times reports that a study published in Hypertension (March) showed that two cups of beet
juice daily lowered blood pressure by about 10 points, equivalent to
the effect of many blood-pressure medicines.
