Yoga Boosts Leveling Neurotransmitter

In a report that will surprise no one who has ever practice yoga, the L.A. Times tells us that yoga may boost levels of a neurotransmitter associated with regulating depression and anxiety disorders. The paper reports that researchers at Boston University School of Medicine and McLean Hospital
in Belmont, Mass., used magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging to
measure levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, levels in the
brains of eight regular yoga practitioners. They found that the yoga
group experienced a 27% increase in GABA levels after an hour of yoga,
while 11 control subjects, who read for an hour, received no such
benefits. Read an abstract of the study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

  1. Is this specific to Yoga? Or does it apply “similarly” for Tai Chi, Shim Bop, and other activities intent on boosting focus, flexibility and balance?

  2. Very interesting article today. I just never made the connection to keep meals between 300 – 500 calories.
I am working and going to graduate school which has given me one bad case of vitamin D deficiency which has made me have to change the way I do everything now…during my very stressful last semester. I have to remember the milk and the sunshine and the calcium…. and the physical therapy….
So, just knowing to count to 300 or 500 makes this stressful life a little more simple. Bring on the neurotransmitters!
