More than 150 million people in this country take dietary supplements because they think it will keep them healthier longer. It won’t. The Washington Post reports on the latest comprehensive study that indicates that such supplements not only do not boost longevity, the appear to increase the risk of dying. According to the Post, the analysis, which pooled data from 68 studies involving more than
232,000 people, found no evidence that taking beta carotene, Vitamin A
or Vitamin E extends life span and, in fact, indicated that the
supplements increase the likelihood of dying by about 5 percent.
Vitamin C and selenium appeared to have no impact — either way — on
longevity. Read more in the Washington Post.
Slamming Vitamins Again?
Well, the Washington Post has published and the rest of the Media has latched onto the latest anti-vitamin study. Seems poorly designed to me. Hmmm, wonder who funded this one??Here are some critical comments excerpted from the article but NOT
I Don’t Buy It!
Here are some critical comments from within the article that seem to be ignored in the Headline:
“Meir Stampfer, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, said the new analysis hasn’t discouraged him from taking his vitamins.
Stampfer said the studies were too diverse to pool together because they looked at various combinations and doses of antioxidants tested in different groups of people. The trials ranged from a three-month study of 109 elderly nursing home residents to a 12-year study of 22,071 male doctors.
“This study does not advance our understanding, and could easily lead to misinterpretation of the data,†said Stampfer, who was not connected to the new report.
The complaints were echoed by Andrew Shao, a scientist at the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a supplement trade association.
“Only when they included and excluded certain trials were they able to find this alleged increase in mortality, which they themselves can’t explain,†Shao said. “There is plenty of data out there that show regular use of antioxidant supplements help to maintain health.—
Another stupid article sponsered by the drug associations to mislead the public into ignoring vitamins and supplements.
Did you guys know that there was a ‘scientific study’ in the early 20’s that conclusively found that BREAST FEEDING YOUR BABY WAS BAD FOR THE BABY!
Yup … sponsored by the baby formula association!
Scientific studies …. made political by the nearest big business (or association) nearest you!
Don’t believe everything science is supposed to tell you … it’s been used to manipulate the public almost as long as religion has!
Always check the studies parameters, their methods, and their assumptions … and whom funded it before drawing a conclusion!
Shocking.. But i dont go with this article.. I’ve been taking and i dont find anything wrong with it.
