First, the myths: Coenzyme Q10, sold as a supplement in many drug stores and health food stores, can help you lose weight, boost energy and treat AIDS, Parkinson’s, cancer heart disease, and several other things. Next, the reality: Q10 appears to be safe, and in a few small studies, it appears to reduce high blood pressure. As this piece in the LA Times reports, there is very little science behind the many claims made by Q10 advocates. On the other hand, the story cites Dr. Robert Bonakdar, director of pain management at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in La Jolla, describing the enzyme, which is produced by the body as "the quarterback of mitochondria." Says Bonakdar: "Levels of coenzyme Q10 determine whether energy
is being made efficiently or sluggishly." Read more in the LA Times.
