The Best Road Back from Shoulder Injury

What’s the best way to come back after rotator cuff surgery? Jeannine Stein, fearless fitness writer for the LA Times tell us that serious athletes are better off rocking it. With weights. Four hours a day. And she is serious. Stein directs our attendtion to Jamie Stark, the director of research and development for Illinois-based ATI Physical Therapy and the author of a recent study on shoulder surgery recovery, who found that some bodies — mainly those bodies belonging to baseball pitchers, swimmers, construction workers — need
to be stronger and more capable than, say, those who spend eight hours
at a computer.  Stark followed the recovery of 42 workers (nearly all men age 19 to 59) who had had
surgery for job-related rotator cuff injuries and who were unable to
work after conventional physical therapy.  The men then subjected themselves to considerably more strenuous workouts lasting four hours a day, five days a week for about six weeks.
They began with warmups, stretching and core exercises for balance and
proper technique. The weight portion of the workouts exercised both
upper and lower body muscles, emphasizing functional movements. Typical
moves included overhead presses, squats and dead lifts. At the end of the study, workers were tested to determine their level of
physical function. Ninety-six percent met or exceeded their previous
levels of job-related physical function before surgery, and 90%
returned to work, 75% at their previous jobs. During a two-year
follow-up, the re-injury rate was 7%.

  1. Excuse me, Dr. Burkhead…the control group is everyone else! How many thousands of patients are needed for you to determine this is an adequate study? One merely has to test anyone else that has had this surgery, up to 5 years past, and measure their strengths. This would be the control group.

  2. As a consrtuction worker it all depends on what you put into your workouts. My therapist was excellent and really worked with me on how everything was working and feeling on a day to day basis.I know people who never pushed themselves and then wonder why their shoulders not doing better.
