The first question may be "Why would anyone want to think of themselves as an athlete?" The Washington Post offers a couple of reasons: Because establishing a fitness identity — of any ability — makes it more
likely you will keep exercising and live a healthy lifestyle. And that makes you more likely to judge yourself on what you
do, not on how you look, which some would argue is the road to
happiness.
So how, exactly does one begin to think of herself as an athlete? To answer that, the Post has to quote Yogi Berra, advising us that "ninety percent of the game is half mental." Fortunately, there is also some useful advice. Remember that it’s all about improving, not outperforming others; tailor opportunities to exercise to be challenging and achievable; find a partner to work with.
