New Book Says “Stop Worrying and Eat It”

Eating
Barry Glassner, USC sociology professor and author of "The Gospel of Food: Everything You Think You Know About Food Is Wrong," would like people to chill. Particularly when it comes to food, says Glassner, Americans worry far too much. They worry about saturated fats, they worry about carbs, they worry about presevatives… But what they should really worry about, says Glassner in this interview with the LA Times, is an inability to enjoy food. 1. I agree with many of the points that Glasner makes in the LA times article and there are also many thoughts I do not agree with.
Starting with the those that I agree with.
I do believe americans think far too much about what it is they should eat and should not eat.
God has given us taste buds for a reason and we should enjoy our food as much as possible.
I also agree in his point that moderation is the key. In fact it is the key for everything in life.
If we could just keep food in moderation and not overly splurge on everything then we would all not have to worry about watching what we eat.
Diets have also gotten out of hand as he mentions. People jump on the latest fad instead of learning self control and obtaining more knowledge about food.
We also need to get back to our roots of home cooked nutritious meals vs. fast food and quick prep meals.
This is where the agreement ends.
Unfortunately, the food companies have given us a reason to be concerned and sadly it has made us all suspicious of manufacutured food.
In the 60’s 70’s manufactures and fast food restaurants had not yet developed fully trans fats, high fructose corn syrup to keep there products cheap and long lasting. It is in abundance now and it is making us FAT – its a fact and has been shown in many studies!
The difference between us and other countries such as europe that have higher fat content foods yet they are fairly skinny is that A. They get much more daily exercise such as more walking and do not rely so much on cars as we do. They take more steps in a day than we do its scientifically proven. B. They enjoy more home cooked meals (non prepackaged) that may be high in fat but do not contain those terrible trans fats and high fructose corn syrup.
This is what we used to do. Until we got to lazy, cheap – seeking out the lowest cost, and busy. Its a fact people around the world have much more leisure time than we do and thus have time to move around with out the use of technology, cook full meals and really enjoy themselves and there meals. Which has also been proven that eating slower fills you up more. Not rushing as many of us americans do.
Lastly, the food manufactures are making money off of us. By making us slaves and addicts of there food with there additives. This is why americans are so over weight. Just as the documentary “Super Size Me” shows, fast food such as Mcdonalds has additives in there food that makes us addicted to it, if we eat it enough. One will feel low and miserable if they do not have it and then will receive a sort of “high” or relief once they get that say large fries and coke. Then they will return to there low state, once again craving the fast food.
Were these additives in Mcdonalds meals during the 60 and 70’s when 1 billion were being sold. The answer is no. So while mcdonalds was not the most healthiest then at least it didnt force you to have deep rooted chemical addictions to it, nor the additives that are really bad for you like trans fats.
So in closing, it is sad that Americans have become so concerned with what they eat but sadly it is because we have been made this way by food manufactures and fast food restaurants that supply addictive, unhealthy processed food. They are constantly after you. Think about all the advestising you see in this country. Go to Europe – you will not see as much advertising, unless it’s an American company. They make money by making us slaves.
Here’s my advice which is a bit like Mr. Glasner’s.
    1. Eat in moderation – know when you have had enough.
    2. Enjoy whatever it is you decide to eat. (If you have to hold your nose to get it down forget it.)
    3. Try to eat enjoyable home cooked meals that are from scratch or whole foods (food in its purest form – meat, vegs, fruit, cheeses etc..) don’t worry about fat content – it won’t matter if its truly non processed. (if your a busy person – prepare for the whole week on sunday so you don’t have to waste time cooking it during the week, you just heat it up.
    4. Get moving (try not to rely so much on motored transportation – if you burn the calories you take in you can eat what you like to an extent.
    5. If you do the previous steps you don’t have to worry about what you eat. You can just enjoy it.
Of course you will go to a restaurant occasionally or buy a processed meal once in a while – but if you do the above the majority of the time you won’t feel guilty or become addicted to it.
