Should you exercise on an empty stomach? Full stomach? Half-full? Half-empty? Theories abound. Informed opinion comes from Sally Squires, who tells us that sports nutritionists advise eating well
throughout the day so the body is well nourished, and having a
mini-meal of about 200 to 300 calories about 60 to 90 minutes before
exercise. Squire consults Leslie Bonci, director of sports medicine nutrition for the University of Pittsburgh, who warns that you try to be active when you’re running on empty, you’ll undercut
your workout. And since you can’t
exercise as hard when your stomach is crying out for food, you also
burn fewer calories. Worse, says Bonci, because your body must marshal resources to
