Gentle readers may consider sending a Thank You note to Sally Squires, who informs us that the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Heart Association have both recently lowered the bar for recommended daily workouts. Turns out that the much complained about 60 to 90 minutes of exercise recommended by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines and the Institute of Medicine was meant for people who were trying to control their weight, not their health. The new guidelines call for 30 minutes of brisk walking — or similar moderately intensive physical activity — five times per week for adults.
