Athletes Show High Rates of Exercise-Induced Asthma

Two things you should know about exercise-induced asthma: It is much more widespread than you thought–more than one-third of varsity college athletes suffer from the condition; and it is much more widely undiagnosed than you thought–86 percent of  athletes who suffer from it don’t know that it’s the reason for their occasional less-than-stellar performance.
Those numbers come from a recent study conducted at Ohio State University Medical Center. There, researchers looked at 107 varsity athletes representing 22 sports, and found that 39 percent
experienced the constricting of the airways during a workout, or
bronchospasm, that is the hallmark of exercise-induced asthma. Of those
athletes with the diagnosis, 86 percent had no previous history of
asthma or bronchospasm. Doubters can read more about it in US News and World Report.
