No, the answer is not a delicate Pinot Noir; it’s carbs and protein, preferably carbs and protein in a form that’s easy to digest. Carmichael suggests brown rice, chicken breast, and roasted or steamed
vegetables, or a turkey sandwich on whole-grain
bread or in a whole-wheat tortilla, with plenty of vegetables stacked
in it. Wait, there’s more. Carmichael points out that because your body is most efficient at replenishing its energy stores during the first 15 to 60 minutes immediately following exercise, it might not be a bad idea to have that food waiting in your vehicle if your workout starts and ends at a trailhead.
