Geezer has two words of advice for gentle readers who believe they are walking themselves to fitness: walk faster. In fact, the findings of research conducted at the University of Alberta suggest that the benefits of merely walking don’t compare to the benefits of exercises that force us to breath hard and break a sweat. The BBC reports that the research looked at 128 people, and compared the oxygen uptake of those who walked at their own pace with the oxygen uptake of those whose routines left them enough breath to be able to speak one or
two sentences with ease at the end. They found that the first group increased peak oxygen
uptake by an average of 4 percent over the six months – but the figure for the
moderate intensity exercise group was 10 percent. Read more from BBC.
