True of False? Daily Vitamins Are Good For You

Nearly 40 percent of Americans regularly take vitamin supplements, the LA Times tells us, even though health experts have yet to agree that there is any long term benefit.  But then, health experts have yet to agree about many things. How not-in-agreement are they? The newspaper quotes Jeffrey Blumberg, professor of
nutrition and director of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at Tufts
University, saying "All Americans — adults, teenagers and children — should be taking a multivitamin. Period."   It also quotes Dr. J. Michael McGinnis, senior scholar at the Institute of Medicine
and chair of the NIH state-of-the-science panel on the role of
multivitamins, saying "If you don’t take multivitamins, there’s no reason to start."
In the end, the Times writer leaves us with this advice: Anyone wishing to see how their nutrient intake, from food alone,
measures up to their daily needs can visit the Department of
Agriculture website: http://www.mypyramid.gov
.  There, readers can plug in vitals such as age, sex, weight and exercise, log
in all the food they eat in a day and see where they fall short on
vitamins and minerals.

  1. Sorry, but while a “chart” of nutrients might be of general interest (IMHO), it doesn’t translate to what any “individual” requires. Can we all wear size 5 shoes or metabolize the exact same number of calories in a day? Size, age, activity level, genetics, personal history, exposure to toxic substances at home or work- all could alter an individuals nutrient requirements.
