The answer, unfortunately for Landis, is that no one is really sure. Testosterone and synthetic steroids can certainly build muscle, but muscle alone does not a champion make. The most interesting revelation in Singer’s piece reports on research conducted at Penn State, in which scientists measured the
testosterone in saliva samples taken from a variety of college
athletes. Their studies found that many male and female athletes’
testosterone levels increased before competitions. After the
competitions were over, among men, the winners’ testosterone levels
tended to rise temporarily while the losers’ testosterone tended to
drop. Read more.
