The Breakfast Wars: Is Breakfast Really the Most Important Meal?

Is breakfast really the most important meal? Maybe not. After decades of mindless repetition of the axiom, some nutritionists are starting to wonder, and some are tossing it in the trash.  In this comprehensive piece on the breakfast wars, the L.A. Times directs our attention to the opinions of Mark Mattson, a neuroscientist at the National Institute on Aging, who hasn’t eaten breakfast in 20 years. Mattson insists that there is no evidence that skipping breakfast is unhealthy. There is however, a study showing that people who skip breakfast are less likely to meet two-thirds of the
recommended dietary intake for many vitamins and minerals, and another study showing that breakfast skippers are more likely to put on weight than breakfast eaters. And, of course, there are many other studies, leading to disagreement among the experts and confusion among the breakfast eaters and breakfast shunners. Geezer says this one is worth the read.
