There are ten exercises in this workout, chosen by the editors of Men’s Journal as the best 30-minute workout ever, a claim that would have to put it up against spearing woolly mammoth or performing with Madonna. Whatever. Geezer will not quibble. But then, neither is he likely to attempt the dreaded Triple Threat, the tenth exercise recommended here, and one that should take four weeks to maximize. Looks like a pretty good workout if you’re already in terrific shape and about 30. Numbers 3 and 9 look particularly perilous for the spine and practically any joint in the upper body. Compound exercises are great, but some are just too compound.
I am 46 and exercises 1, 4 and 5 have been in my routine for about eight months, or were, until I recently strained my back doing one legged planks with my foot on the ball. Bottom line is most of these have the potential to wrack an old or aging back and I would not try this routine without a trainer the first few times. I also question attempting to complete three reps of this circuit in 30 minutes, looks a bit optimistic . . .
