Hula Hoop Dreams

Geezer has little doubt that hula hoop dancing is the "awesome workout" that it is said to be by Greg Workman, the only male in a hula hoop class described in this piece in the L.A. Times. He remembers all too well the frantic struggle to keep the hoop from descending to his knees and ankles, and he is wondering if someone has invented a calorie burn meter that will calculate the calories burned per minute of excruciating embarrassment. What is more suprising is the claim by L.A. Times writer Hilary MacGregor that hula hooping is "Coming back in big way."  Whatev. MacGregor delivers a nice profile of hula hoop diva Anah Reichenbach, whose "hoop-downs" have lighted up everything from Burning Man festivals to Coke commercials to Sting’s Sacred Love
Tour. She also warns us that hooping doesn’t involve strength so much as supreme concentration, and that tension is inversely proportional to success. Read more in the L.A Times, and more about hula hoop fitness here.

  1. Hi there, Anah here.. thanks for the nice commentary..but I have one beef… the “whatev” on the FACT that hooping is coming back in a big way. Maybe you should do a bit of reseach before your eschew the idea completely. Here is a fact: There are at least 10 companies in the US alone with the hoop as their main focus. These companies are steadly increasing the already rapidly rising numbers of adult hoopers worldwide.. Get in a hoop and you will see the difference and why the circle still holds juice!
    see you in the circle!
