How to Stay in Shape While Injured

Geezer knows all too many people for whom the real pain of a sports injury is not the injury–it’s the inability to run through a normal daily exercise routine for the days or weeks it takes to recover. What to do? The Moving Crew has a few suggestions specific to leg and foot injuries:
1. Find a swimming pool and a flotation vest, and try deep-water jogging. Once the injured limb can support some weight, take your jogging into the shallow end.
2. Elliptical machines and rowers, the Crew suggests, may permit exercise without pain, and it they don’t work, try to find a health club with an Arc Trainer.
3. If none of the above work, you could be stuck with upper-body circuit training with weights, or not-exactly-easy-to-find upper-extremity bikes.
The most important thing, the Crew says, is
to keep the physical activity habit going, somehow, while you heal.  A long layoff
can easily become a lifelong layoff.
