It’s no wonder that rowing machines born of the Great Rowing Machine Boom of the early 80s are now a staple of so many yard sales ($15 and not a penny more). They are to rowing what the first running machines were to running; essentially unrelated. These days, technology has moved many exercise machines much closer to the motion they are intended to mimic, and rowing machines make a particularly good case study.
The L.A. Times makes that point nicely in this review of four new (and pricey) rowing machines. Geezer admires machine number one, called WaterRower, and equipped with a "quiet, toilet-bowlish "whoosh" that is smooth and soothing." Read about all four machines here.
