Now that Americans consume one third of their calories outside the home, a new FDA-funded report suggests that it’s time for restaurants to start fighting fat. How? Well, they could shift the emphasis of their marketing to lower-calorie choices. They could include more of those options on menus. They could
jigger portion sizes and the variety of foods available in mixed dishes
to reduce the overall number of calories taken in by diners. They could bundle
meals with more fruits and vegetables. And they could let consumers know how many calories are contained in a meal also
could guide the choices they make.
Those are just a few of the suggestions offered up in the study, which is reported on in the Washington Post.
