A reader of Outside online asks the magazine’s answer man, Chris Carmichael, which is better: one 60-minute workout a day or two 30-minute workouts a day. A tough one, Carmichael claims, before coughing up what seems to be his clear choice: once a day for 60 minutes. Why? Here’s what Carmichael says:
"Sustained exercise for longer periods of time leads to important
changes in your muscles. The mitochondria, which are the powerhouses
that burn carbohydrate and fat during aerobic exercise, grow and
multiply in response to longer and harder bouts of exercise. If the
mitochondria you have are already capable of delivering the energy you
need for 30 minutes, then there’s no reason for your muscles to adapt
and develop the ability to burn more fat calories per minute."

Because of a floppy mitral valve, my doctor has cautioned against heavy lifting. Is 20 repetitions with half the weight the same as 10 repetitions with full weight?
what is the quickest and most effective workout for biceps and triceps?
IMHO No. But 20 reps with half is probably a better plan (IF YOUR DOC APPROVES) in your situation. More weight fewer reps tends to bulk you up and creates more stress to the cardiovascular system; More reps, less weight tends to trim you up as well as build core strength. Consider your age, create realistic goals and understand why it is you are doing this in the first place. Check with your Doc.

When I saw the headline, I almost laughed. How about exercising ALL day? I thought, recalling when I worked as a house carpenter and then went to rugby practice or to the gym. But OK, the question is there. I’d definitely vote for the one hour, but let’s be careful not to encourage people looking for excuses like “I’ll never get a whole hour, I might as well give up.” I think we should cut through all the questions like this and the classic “Is it better to exercise in the morning or in the evening?” The best time to exercise is whenever you can. And for as long as you can.
Agree with Dana 110% !! That’s the crux of it.
