Are Eggs Getting a Bum Cholesterol Rap?

Geezer remembers the dread that darkened the nation’s breakfast tables when it was first discovered that eggs were actually cholesterol bombs, and very probably the instuments of death in a plot by chickens to take over the world. Since then, scientists have figured out a couple of things about cholesterol (and chickens). 1. There is good cholesterol (HDLs) and there is bad cholesterol (LDLs), and 2. Different people respond differently to cholesterol, and only about 40 percent respond in ways that are truly worrying.
Science News reports on research from the University of Connecticut that found that when people ate three or more eggs per day their bodies made bigger
LDL- and HDL-lipoprotein particles than when they ate no eggs. Other recent studies have suggested that larger LDLs
are less likely than small ones to enter artery walls and contribute
their cholesterol load to artery-clogging plaque. Similarly, larger
HDLs are more robust than smaller ones at hauling cholesterol out of
the bloodstream.  Lead researcher Christine M. Greene reportedly notes that that
most people’s bodies handle the cholesterol from eggs in a way that is
least likely to harm the heart. Egg’s she says, should not be construed as a "dietary evil." Read more about eggs from Science News.
