AMC’s Best Hikes Along Cliffs

AMC Outdoors, the excellent magazine of Appalachian Mountain Club, inviites readers to “dance wiith vertigo atop the Northeast’s most impressive cliffs.” It’s an offer than many of Geezer’s more sensible associates would eagerly decline, but, as the AMC understands, a certain curious readership will find it irresistible. The piece takes hikers to Acadia National Park, to Mount Pisgah in Vermont, to the Trapps at Mohonk Preserve in New York, and to five other vertigo-inducing sites. Find all of them here.

  1. This breaks my heart. Thirty-three years ago I spent a day on the Castellated Ridge Trail in the Northern Presidentials in New Hampshire, along its spectacular cliffs. The next day my knees swelled up and I couldn’t walk, but after the swelling went down, my life returned to normal. Except for the noise in my knees. A few years later I was introduced to the word “osteoarthritis.” I would just say to anyone, geezer or otherwise, please study the guides to the trails, and don’t take any on impulse. You will of course look at a topo map, but be warned that many ridge trails have ups and downs too small for the intervals, and you could take a beating if you’re a relatively heavy person or carrying a heavy pack.

  2. These look to be very exciting routes and the area is beautiful…
