The good news, for men who enjoy a drink now and then, is that booze does not appear to influence the incidence of prostate cancer. And the excellent news, for those same men, is that it may reduce the incidence of aggressive prostate cancer. The numbers, at this point, are far from conclusive, but as the Scientific American reports, research conducted at the University of Melbourne, Australia, analyzed data on 16,872 men
followed from 1994 to 2003. The participants, aged from
27 to 70, were asked for detailed information on
alcohol consumption.Overall, Sciam reports, no association was observed between alcohol intake
and the development of prostate cancer, but compared with abstainers, men who consumed 1 to 19 gram per
day of alcohol, (no more than about one and a half drinks per
day), had a slightly reduced risk of aggressive prostate
cancers.
