Devotees of acupuncture will not be shocked to learn that the ancient Chinese treatment effectively relieves low back pain, but it may be comforting to doubters to know that the therapy now has the seal of approval of Western science. The Scientific American reports on research conducted at the University of York, which looked at the benefits of adding acucpunture to regular back pain treatment of medication, exercise and physiotherapy. The two-year study, involving 241 back-pain sufferers, showed that after three months, there was no appreciable difference in pain of those who received acupuncture and those who did not. After one year, however, it was evident that the acupunture did relieve pain, and after two years, the differences between the two groups was even greater.
