Working Out With Ben & Jerry’s CEO

What’s Your Workout?, The Wall Street Journal’s occasional column on what executives do to keep going strong looks at Walt Freese, the 51-year-old CEO of Ben & Jerry’s. Freese, who has meditated since he was 17, says that he found as he approached mid-life that he needed "a goal to focus on." He chose triathlons. The Journal reports that Freese started training with a coach and soon found his schedule revolving around workouts: biking in the morning, swimming during lunch hour, squeaking in runs after work. Now that Freese has about a dozen triathlons under his belt, however, he has cut back on the training to what he calls a "healthy and appropriate level for an aging guy." For the ice cream king, that means just over an hour of exercise three days a week, including a 30 minutes of biking, strength training on a universal weight machine, and stretching.
