Not everything posted on SportsGeezer is directly applicable to your daily fitness regimen. Some of it, like this item on research suggesting that redheads are better at dealing with pain, is, well, fairly useless. Here’s the story anyway: A team of British scientists working with researchers at Edinburgh University has determined that different strains of mice have different pain thresholds. As this story in the Daily Mail reports, the strain of mice with the highest threshold has a gene that in humans would produce red hair and fair skin. More interesting, but equally useless, is the news that the British study builds upon research done at McGill University, which found that redheaded women experienced a much greater (three times greater, to be precise) pain killing effect from the same amount of a natural morphine-like opoid substance than did blondes, brunettes, and one other category of subjects: men.
I just want to say something. I don’t agree with you. You can’t go by mice. You have to go by people. Not all redheads are related. Just like all blondes are not related. You guys are stupid. When a redhead went to try out for for the national gaurds. Everyone was screaming at the redhead thinking she should be able to deal with lifting and the pain. The two blondes next to her had more strength and were not enduring any pain, but the redhead was. So explain that one to me?
maybe she dyed her. ever think of that?
Ya, I am a blonde that joined the army. I have seen many blondes that are stronger than redheads. Many that got in. The redheads did not pass. I believe that is true. I have served my four years eight years ago.
I have also been in the National gaurds and I know for a fact that when I was there I have seen a blonde and a redhead. Ya the redhead was weaker than the blonde. I think smart mouth that commented on January 18th, 2006 cant handle the fact that a real redhead might be weaker than a blonde. I agree with November 23,2005’s statement. I have known many redheads that are way weaker than some blondes. That is just the honest truth. Most redheads are very weak physically. From my experience and the fact that they failed in the physical part during drills and lifting. I know some friends of mine that have dated a blonde and a redhead and also agrees that the redhead was weaker physically.
Redheads are way weaker than blondes physically and they have been the most to be physically abused growing up. They just are judged for the wrong reasons and yes I have studied a lot.
Those comments are nuts. “My neighbor is a fat brunette so most brunette’s are fat. My cousin is a red-head and she’s super smart just like all red-heads, etc.” What are you people talking about? We are all different and you can’t say “red heads are weak, blondes are amazingly powerful” based on a few people you know. Broad generalizations are rarely accurate. The only thing we know for sure is that rats with that certain gene have a higher threshold for pain.
P.S. Testing how much pain rats can handle sounds a little sadistic. (I wonder how much it hurts if I rip this one’s toes off?)
Im gonna have 2 agree with destiny on this one. saying red heads are weak just from a few observations youve had is just stupid. i happen 2 b a readhead and ive been told im pretty tough. i do have a pretty high tolerance 2 pain 2. but im not saying that everyone else with red hair also does. people differ. common sense…..use your heads.
I am a natural redhead and can’t say if pain is greater or less for me than others. What I can say is this….the article is about pain, not strength. Quit having a “blonde” moment and realize this before spouting off how brunettes and such are stronger. Has nothing to do with the subject matter.
Well, I’m a natural redhead, and I am very strong, and also very smart, and I would say that I tolerate quite a bit of pain, and I am also very fat, and have big feet. Therefore, it stands to reason that all redheads eat wheaties for breakfast, need more vitamin C than non-redheads, and know that blondes and brunettes just don’t get it!

I am a natural redhead, strong, smart, and thin (around 140 pounds and 5′ 8″) this is absolutely rediculous, these generalizations. OMG, grow up and quit being prejudice people.
um, did you ever think that hair color doesnt determine strength?? thats dumb to think it does, it just determines heritage and genes, it doesnt tell how strong you are or how much pain you can endure, that is all in your mindset, not your hair roots
actually ive made some observations Tanned blonde types actually are stronger overall Its something you can really pick straight away. And redheads and strawberry blondes are naturally more muscular overall. At least half if not more of the australian basketball teams are made up of redheads and strawberry blondes , which is way out of proportion to their population number
Do none of you have scientific bone in your body? Research is being done to learn more about the human body and possibly human history. You can’t disparage the work just because you have a personal example that doesn’t fit the findings. If you want to question the work, find a study and get your own results to argue with. Otherwise, stop waving a flag saying the earth is flat and get out of the way for the people who are interested in improving mankind.
This isn’t about strength–it’s about dealing with pain!!
