We’ve heard this claim before, most loudly from barefoot marathon runner Ken Saxton, but now we’re hearing from fitness writers at the Times of London: Running shoes are your feet’s worst enemy. According to the Times, few of us (ballerinas and some athletes excluded) do the work necessary to strengthen our feet. We simply cram them into shoes, where the 26 bones, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles in each foot cannot function properly. Better, many physical therapists say, to find a way to let our foot muscles do the work they were designed to do. The simplest way to do that, of course, would be to go barefoot, and some runners, like Saxton, do just that. But now, the Times reports, Nike has come to our feet’s rescue and designed a "Free" running shoe, one that protects the soles of our feet, but helps strenghten, rather than support, foot muscles. Just one quick bit of advice: the footwear maker recommends pottering about in the shoes for up to six weeks before you break into a sweat, and then suggests wearing them for one short run out of three.
