First, read this:
"For many years, the free radical hypothesis of aging has been utilized to suggest that age-related changes occur as a result of an increasing inability to cope with oxidative stress (OS) that occurs throughout the life-span and is associated with increasing sensitivity to the effects of oxidative stressors. Oxidative stress is defined as an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants in favor of the former, resulting in oxidative damage to molecules such as DNA, lipids and proteins. After life-long free-radical insult on an organ which already shows increased vulnerability to OS, functional deficits are observed."
Got that? Got part of it? Got any of it? Geezer is unconcerned. Because understanding that endorsement of antioxidants, brought to you by the U.S Highbush Blueberry Council, is suddenly a lot less important than it use to be. The Associated Press has rounded up several medical experts who seem eager to throw cold water on the promises of youth, energy, and cancer-free life that come, in large part, from what the writers estimate to be a $526 million antioxidant industry. The story quotes researchers at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and from Tufts University’s Friedman School of Nutrition who worry that antioxidant hype has "fostered a faulty silver bullet mind-set that can hinder health more than help."
For the moment, at least, it looks like Geezer didn’t really have to eat all those tomatoes. What ev? They tasted great. Read more about the importance of eating a balanced diet and getting over antioxidant hype.
