Eggs May Be Eggsellent For Your Health, After All

Geezer’s been around so long that he remembers when eggs were good for you. Then, of course, they were bad for you, because they were high in cholesterol, and now they are, well, probably good for you but possibly bad for you. Hey, nobody said it would be easy to decide what to eat for breakfast.  The latest report on the probably-good-for-you theory comes from Sally Squires, who points out that eggs are so probably-good-for-you that Australia’s equivalent of the American Heart Association recently awarded eggs a check-mark symbol that’s reserved for heart-healthy food.  Squires also reports that eggs are widely praised as a low-cost source of protein, that they pack key vitamins and minerals, and that they are low in saturated fat, have no trans fat and provide some healthful fat. So what was all that  fuss about high cholesterol? That’s the possibly-bad-for-you part. Studies have shown, Squires says, that eating an egg a day leads to about a 1% to 3% increase in blood cholesterol levels, not exactly a major health threat. Finally, Squires offers some advice: If you’re worried about cholesterol, eat the white of the egg and lose the yolk. The yolk is where all the cholesterol is.  Read more.
