Big Booty Good For Health

It may not impress central casting, but a certain amount of fat on women’s buttocks and hips appears to be just what the doctor ordered. The Boston Globe reports that researchers at the University of Colorado studied 95 women past menopause and found that those with more fat on their thighs and bottoms–known in the fat business as "peripheral fat"– had healthier scores on several markers in the blood, including triglycerides and sugar levels. Rachael Van Pelt, the lead researcher the study, which is published in The
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism
, describes leg fat as " protective,
at least with respect to the risk factors we’ve looked at."  Dr. Anne B. Newman, a University of Pittsburgh professor who co-authored a different study with similar findings, suggests that women should stop worrying about fat thighs, but continue worrying about fat waistlines. Why is that? Because the Colorado study showed that when women were also heavy above the waist,  most advantages of the leg fat vanished. Read more.
