With just a few weeks left before the wet-suited flock of triathletes returns to my favorite kettle pond, it’s time to think about retrieving the rhythm and rebuilding the strength needed to get the most from my second favorite medium. Author Mat Luebbers, the Program Director for the Marine Corp Community Services Semper Fit/Aquatics Okinawa Dolphins Swim Team in Japan, reminds me that those once a week swims of the winter season are not enough to maintain my “feel for the water.” Three times a week is more like it. He stresses the importance of good technique, which, unfortunately, just doesn’t happen without plenty of strength.
