West Virginia’s Wild Ride

Each of the six weekends after Labor Day, the Army Corps opens the sluices on the Summersville Dam, in Summersville, West Virginia, and the usually quiet Gauley River explodes into more than 100 rapids, ranked from Class III to V-plus. According to this story in the New York Times, it just may be the best ride in the country, even if the locals don’t quite get the thrill.
