Good Cholesterol Is Also Good For Your Brain
When they say “good cholesterol,” the “good” has always meant good for your body. Now researchers at the University of California at Davis are convinced that good cholesterol is also good for your brain. A UC Davis news release reports that high levels of “good” cholesterol and low levels of “bad” cholesterol are correlated with lower levels of the amyloid plaque deposition in the brain that is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease, in a pattern that mirrors the relationship between good and bad cholesterol in cardiovascular disease. The study looked at the amyloid levels and cholesterol measurements in 74 people: three with mild dementia, 33 who were cognitively normal, and 38 who had mild cognitive impairment. And yes, higher fasting levels of LDL and lower levels of HDL both were associated with greater brain amyloid — a first-time finding linking cholesterol fractions in the blood and amyloid deposition in the brain. But you knew that. Read more from UC Davis.
