Wait, there’s more, some slight reduction in incidents of colorectal cancer. And now, from researchers at Warwick Medical School, comes the bad news: an aspirin a day also comes with a 37 percent increase in gastrointestinal bleeding, and between a 32 percent-38 percent increase in the likelihood of a haemorrhagic stroke. It’ confusing. What’s a health minded person to do? Aileen Clarke, Professor of Public Health Research and Director of Warwick Evidence at Warwick Medical School, has one answer: more research. “We need to be extremely careful about over-promoting aspirin intervention without having first fully understood these negative side effects,” says Clarke.
