Men: Maybe It’s The Estrogen, Not The Testosterone
The next time your doctor tells you that your less-than-fiery sex drive and belly flab can be blamed on declining testosterone, direct her to this study, which looks at hormone therapy and older men. Writing about the study in the New York Times, Gina Kolata offers this extraordinary quote from lead author and Harvard Med School endocrinologist Joel Finkelstein:”Some of the symptoms routinely attributed to testosterone deficiency are actually partially or almost exclusively caused by the decline in estrogens.” Yikes! Isn’t estrogen the female sex hormone? Yes, it is, but as Kolata points out, “both men and women make estrogen out of testosterone, and men make so much that they end up with at least twice as much estrogen as postmenopausal women.” So, should doctors prescribe estrogen for men with flagging sex drive and low energy?
