Concussions Should End Play For The Day
No athlete at any age level or skill level should get back in the game after a concussion, and the athlete should stay out of play for the rest of the day. You probably knew that, but now we have it as official advice from the Concussion in Sport Group (CISG 4), an expert panel sponsored by five international sports governing bodies. ScienceDaily reports that the CISG has met every four years since 2000 with the goal of establishing updated “worldwide policy guidelines for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of sports-related concussion.” In its most strongly worded change from past versions, the CISG 4 rules out any possibility of same-day return to play for athletes with suspected concussion — at any age or any level of competition. To help coaches and others recognize a concussion, the CISG 4 introduces a new “Concussion Recognition Tool” (CRT), avialbe in pdf form here.
