Acid Reflux Drugs Sap Vitamin B-12
The pros of vitamin B-12 are well documented–they keep your brain and nervous system running properly, and your blood healthy. So it’s discouraging to learn that vitamin B-12 can be diminished by class of acid reflux drugs known and proton pump inhibitors, such as Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid. HealthDay reports that researchers have found that taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to ease the symptoms of excess stomach acid for more than two years was linked to a 65 percent increase in the risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency. Wait, there’s more. Researchers also found that using acid-suppressing drugs called histamine-2 receptor antagonists — also known as H2 blockers –these include Tagamet, Pepcid and Zantac, for two years was associated with a 25 percent increase in the risk of B-12 deficiency.
